Insight into the Distribution of High-pressure Shock Metamorphism in Rubble-pile Asteroids

Shock metamorphism in ordinary chondrites allows for reconstructing impact events between asteroids the main asteroid belt. Shock-darkening of occurs at onset complete shock melting rock (>70 GPa) or injection sulfide and metal melt into cracks within solid silicates (\sim 50 GPa). Darkening masks diagnostic silicate features observed reflectance spectrum S-complex so they appear similar to C/X-complex asteroids. In this work, we investigate pressure associated pattern rubble-pile velocities 4-10 km/s. We use iSALE physics code implement two-dimensional models with simplified properties order quantify influence following parameters on shock-darkening efficiency: velocity, porosity asteroid, impactor size, ejection efficiency. observe that, asteroids, velocity size are constraining recording high-grade metamorphism. Yet, recorded fraction higher stages remains low (<0.2). Varying boulders from 10% 30% does not significantly affect distribution shock-darkened material. The is very that monolithic same porosity. Thus, producing significant volumes high-degree shocked requires strong collision (impact above 8 km/s and/or large sizes impactors).
